3 Day Potty Training
In all honesty, I was really lagging potty training with my then 27-month-old. I knew it was something that had to be done, so I planned to start it after our family vacation to Hawaii because I didn’t want to worry about accidents during our trip. I had been reading about Lora Jensen’s “3 Day Potty Training” and it felt like the perfect method for us. I wanted something quick (although it requires your full attention and commitment for three days) and effective. I know other moms who had tried this method and were satisfied with the results. I had to mentally prepare myself to be completely committed those 3 days because I really just wanted to get it over with and have her fully trained in 3 days, and not have to go back and forth with diapers to train her.
To prepare for the training, I had bought a lot of underwear, a small potty training toilet, an extra waterproof mattress cover, flushable wipes, stickers and a travel potty. I have linked all the items as referenced at the end of the blog. We did the training from Saturday-Monday since I wanted my husband to be part of the training as well to help understand the process. It is not recommend to leave your house during the 3-day training, as all your attention and focus is on your toddler and you need to be close to the potty at all times. On the first day, after Ella had breakfast, we took off her last diaper and put on underwear. We told her she would no longer wear diapers because she is a “big girl” now. I went ahead and had her throw ALL of her diapers in the trash (yes, all of them) by herself and we all said goodbye to the diapers. I think this is the hardest for most moms because they say, “What if I really need one diaper” or “What about a diaper at nighttime?” Believe me, if you want this work and work fast, you need to trust that they really won’t need them anymore, even during nighttime. The key for nighttime success is you stop any liquids at least 2 hours before bedtime. You should have a waterproof mattress cover and also an extra one and ABSOLUTELY NO TRAINING DIAPERS AT ANY TIME. Just think of it like this, the worst that can happen is they will have an accident and you will go change them. I was very lucky Ella didn’t have any nighttime accidents but I would jump out of bed the second she was up and rush her to the restroom. Sometimes she could hold it but other times, she would go while I was taking her lol.
We were very very consistent and really applied all of Lora Jensen’s methods no matter how frustrating it got. You have to be completely understanding and loving and not show any kind of frustration with your toddler. You NEVER ask them if they have to go, you just keep consistently reminding them that if they have to go to let you know. We would really praise her for every little bit she did in the toilet. We would give her stickers and her favorite cookies for her bigger accomplishments. You should constantly giver her water and fiber based foods so she can go a lot and have practice. We would clap, dance, and do whatever it took for her to know it was a very big deal that she went in the potty instead of having an accident in her underwear. You need A LOT of underwear, in the middle of training my husband had to run out to buy a ton more because she was having so many minor accidents.
At the end of day 3, I wasn’t really confident in her training so I decided to continue another 1-2 days. I really saw major improvements and she really got the hang out of it. The training states if they don’t get it at all after 3 days (which rarely happens) to completely stop any kind of training for 60 days then start again. The toughest part was actually leaving the house after training because you are so scared waiting for an accident in the car seat or in public spaces. You just have to take your travel potty and keep asking them if they have to go to let you know just like you do during training. Consistency and patience are key for a successful 3-day potting training. Here is the link for more information on Lora Jensen’s “3 Day Potty Training” https://www.amazon.com/Day-Potty-Training-Lora-Jensen-ebook/dp/B00IU8Y0AA and how to purchase the eBook for a very detailed description of the method and everything you need to know before you start. It really makes life easier once they are full trained and just tell you when they need to go. Good luck mamas ☺
